The original meaning was in fine art, where cartoon meant a preparatory drawing for a piece of art, such as a painting or tapestry. The modern meaning refers to both humorous illustrations in print and animated films. Even more recently, there are several contemporary meanings, including creative visual work for electronic media and animated digital media. When the word cartoon is applied to print media, it most often refers to a humorous single-panel drawing or gag cartoon, most of which have typeset captions rather than speech balloons. A lot of people claim that the cartoon Spongebob Squarepants has done well because it is different from most other cartoons, I was wondering how is it different? Thank you so much to all who answer. It's different and special because most cartoon shows are about kids or teenager that go to school and live with their parents, while all the characters on SpongeBob are adults, live by their own and have jobs, and even thought they are adults they're still kids at heart, but living like adults. Also it's set underwater, I mean, how awesome is that!? It's even different on it's animation; the background are painted by hand and the show is pretty much drawn then animated. Q. I have 2 boys and now a little girl and it seems like Saturday cartoons are mostly boy themed anymore. Ninja Turtles, Dinosaur King, Teen Titans. I remember there being cartoons like the Care Bears and Jem and Holograms. Do they still have girly cartoons or do you just have to buy DVDs of them now? My daughter likes Dora the Explorer on Nick Jr. She also likes Caillou on PBS, who happens to be a little boy, but I never really thought of certain cartoons as being specifically for a boy or girl. The Backyardigans is also a great little show (also on Nick Jr.) and can be for either a boy or girl. By the way, I do believe some of those 80s cartoons are making a comeback...I've definitely seen Care Bears around.
